Board of Supervisors representative Karen Lang recently spoke to the depth of this crisis during a September 15 meeting, outlining exactly what is at stake for local governments.

"I think there will be another run at a larger reform effort because public agencies are increasingly seeing large claims be paid out that impair your ability to provide core services to constituents."

Ed Hatzenbeler, Superintendent of the Orting School District in Washington, brought this reality to light during a September 17 district meeting. He reported a massive half million dollar increase in the district's insurance bill over the previous year alone. Hatzenbeler warned that these higher costs are causing severe budget issues that will ultimately force harmful service reductions in schools. Recognizing the grim reality facing students without immediate financial relief, he noted that "kids are going to suffer. They've been suffering, and we can't sustain that trajectory."

Lawsuit abuse doesn't just affect the courts, this drain ripples across every service a community depends on, from the roads people drive to work, to the buses that carry their kids to school.
