Miami Fraud Scheme Causes Higher Prices for All Floridians

New investigative reporting from NBC Miami details how two women are accused of operating an insurance fraud scheme out of a medical center. The women billed their insurance company for medical services and physical therapy they never provided, and used blank and post-dated forms signed by patients.

Jose Beamont, an insurance agent with Miami Insurance Brokers said this type of scam is “very common, we see it very often.”

Companies are not the only ones who feel the effects from these types of schemes, it causes prices to go up for every consumer in Florida. Beaumont said:

“This causes the entire state to have higher premiums because of their loss ratio. They simply transfer the cost over to the consumer, so we are all paying more for insurance because of  fraudulent people in the state.”

Florida recently made progress in this effort, passing legislation in 2023 that cracked down on billboard attorneys. As a result, insurance premiums are going down in Florida for the first time in years, according to state officials. But there is clearly more work to be done. To protect Floridians from higher prices, ending fraud will help ensure a fair and legal justice system.
