Washington, D.C. — The dark-money campaign against lawsuit abuse reform appears to be backfiring in Texas, according to public statements from Texas lawmakers. Tomorrow, the Texas House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on HB 4806, the house companion bill to SB 30, which passed out of the Senate last month.
Anonymous out-of-state groups have flooded Texas inboxes with misinformation and attacks on a wide range of bills aimed at curbing lawsuit abuse. Their misinformation campaign is collapsing, as conservative lawmakers across the state publicly call it out:
“In case any of the dark‑money groups are reading this: your smear campaigns always backfire.” – Rep. Brooks Landgraf, Op-Ed in the Odessa American
“This text is not true…. I can hazard a guess that it is a trial-attorney group outside the state.” — Rep. Cody Vasut, writing on Facebook.
“They are sending it across Texas trying to box reps in to force a certain vote. They don’t realize how badly they are hurting themselves doing it.” – Rep. Wes Virdell, writing on X.
“A true dark money PAC has spent a lot of money maligning me in multiple ads to my district. They are trial lawyers who don’t want any limits on their ability to profit from lawsuits, so they are attempting to emotionally manipulate voters in the same way they emotionally manipulate jurors at the expense of hard working Texans… Don’t bully me.” – Rep. Hillary Hickland, writing on X.
Texans are not buying the lies and are rallying behind lawmakers determined to end lawsuit abuse. As HB 4806 heads to committee, momentum is on the side of those pushing for transparency over a dark-money misinformation campaign.
